Oh engagement sessions…..how I love thee!!!
I encourage all of my wedding couples to get engagement photos done, for many reasons! This particular moment in your lives, as you prepare to become husband and wife, a unit, a family, is so important. These are the moments that can not be replaced. I also recommend engagement photos as this is a great time for us to know each other….a practice for the wedding day! I get to know a little bit about the bride and groom, find out what you like and don’t like, and really get a feel on how we will work each other on the wedding day!
I get questions all the time about engagement sessions, so I wanted to share with you guys some tips on how to prepare for your engagement session that I have found useful photographing so many of them!!
Tips for your Engagement Session!
1. Determine the feel of your engagement session.
What are some of the things that you guys like to do together? What is your personality? What is the story of your relationship? My number one priority in engagement sessions is to tell the story of your relationship. Who you are to each other. Whether at a coffee shop, the park, a sports complex, an open field, downtown, the library, on the water, the session is about telling your story. Remember, these are not MY memories, they are yours! Knowing what you want ahead of time and planning with me will make this session everything that you’ve been dreaming of!
2. Feel Pretty and Handsome…But Be Comfortable!!!
These engagement photos will be so important to you! You will possibly send them out for Save The Dates and your Wedding Invitations, have them at your wedding, hang them on your wall, and share them with your family for years to come! So yes, brides to be, get your hair and makeup done! Get a nice outfit or two! FEEL beautiful! You deserve it! Grooms, the same goes for you! Even though they tend to have it a bit easier don’t they ladies! Make sure your outfits compliment each other, but don’t go too matchy! And ladies, careful with the sky high heels, unless you are very comfortable in them! I don’t need you breaking your ankle before the big day!
3. Location and Time
I always like to make sure I photograph my engagement sessions either at sunrise or an hour and a half before sunset. This gives us the PERFECT light to shoot in and really gives that natural glow that you see in so many of my photos. Because we are working with that photographers call the “golden light”, it is imperative that you arrive on time for your session, so we can get the most out of the time we have together!
4. Shine your rings ladies!!!
I love love LOVE ring shots. They are my favorite detail to photograph on both the wedding day and the engagement day! So make sure those ring are nice and pretty for your session!
5. Relax!!! And trust your photographer!!
As you are getting ready for your engagement session, remember that I do not at all expect you to be a pro at this! I even expect us to laugh a bit as we are trying to find the right angles, and telling the groom where to place his hand on you! I can’t speak for all photographers but I tell my couples that it takes a good 10-15 minutes to warm up at the beginning of their shoot. So relax and don’t be nervous! You’re going to be great at this! Trust your photographer, allow them to be creative and you’ll have an amazing shoot!
